Roof repairs, re-roofs and flat roofs for the big post-war estate under Robins Wood Hill โ€” the one part of Gloucester that sits on a real hillside.

About the area

Matson and Robinswood: building on the hill

Most of Gloucester is flat. Robins Wood Hill is the exception: a Cotswold outlier rising to 198 metres, now a 100-hectare country park. Matson spreads across its lower slopes, and Robinswood sits beside it.

The Matson estate was started by the corporation in 1951 and grew quickly โ€” the Victoria County History counts 1,717 homes here by 1963. More council housing, some 378 homes, followed after 1974 on the site of the former barracks on Robins Wood Hill. Before all that, Matson House served as Charles I’s headquarters during the siege of Gloucester in 1643, and in the early 1890s G. T. Whitfield opened a brickworks on the hill.

For roofs, the hill is the point. Houses on its slopes stand higher and more exposed than streets down on the flat, which tends to show up as loosened ridges, lifted verges and tiles moved by wind. Most of the housing here is of the same post-war generation, so the faults tend to be shared ones.

What we do here

Common roofing work in Matson & Robinswood

Ridge and verge repairs

Wind and frost work on old mortar. We re-bed and mechanically fix ridges and verges, or fit dry-fix systems.

Tile refixing

Slipped tiles refixed and fixings checked across the slope, so one storm does not lift the next row.

Re-roofs

Where post-war coverings have reached the end of their life, a full re-roof with new membrane and battens.

Garages and flat roofs

Flat-roofed garages and extensions re-covered in EPDM.

Chimneys

Cracked flaunching, open joints and loose pots โ€” or capping and ventilating stacks you no longer use.

Storm call-outs

Slopes facing open ground catch the wind. Our emergency service makes roofs safe fast.

Honest advice

Worth knowing if you live in Matson or Robinswood

Fix the ridge before it fixes you

A loose ridge tile on a slope is the most common storm casualty. Mechanical fixing is a modest cost compared with replacing what falls.

Neighbours often share the same fault

Houses built together age together. If next door has had their ridge redone, yours may be close behind.

Ex-council homes vary

Owners have made different changes over the years. We look at your roof as it is now, not as it was built.

Ask before solar

If solar panels are on the cards, check the roof covering first โ€” it is cheaper to sort before the panels go on.
